About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

Jolie Holland's Springtime Can Kill You creates its own entrancing world, one that is dreamy, pastoral, eerie, and vaguely familiar. At times it recalls old, scratchy-groove 78s, although it's hard to decide whether they would be jazz, blues, or country recordings. Holland's warbling voice often lags behind the beat, suspending rhythms and wavering between notes; like Madeleine Peyroux, she's bound to elicit Billie Holiday comparisons while at other times sounding like Cat Power. And like Sam Phillips or Tom Waits (who is a fan), she blends textures that are artful, unforced, and timeless. This third album from the former member of the Be Good Tanyas is her most confident and fully realized work. A loose song cycle about the travails of lust and friendship, it returns to images of birds, seasons, and moons (and moonshine), with phrases from one song often turning up in another. "You're Not Satisfied" recalls a New Orleans funeral march; "Adieu False Heart" contains a bit of Cajun fiddling; and the title track matches understated, jazzy drumming, a distant baritone horn, and Holland's own ghostly whistle. Springtime Can Kill You's adult lullabies, full of vivid images and bittersweet dreams, linger in the mind like half-recollected memories. Steve Klinge, Barnes & Noble
