About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

With uplifting lyrics sung in a clear, soaring voice, Jewel has won the hearts of an audience ready for a kinder, gentler, post-grunge pop star. Following the multi-platinum success of her 1995 debut, PIECES OF YOU, this modern folk singer returned with SPIRIT, an album that is musically more refined ("Kiss the Flame," "Barcelona") but lyrically no less idealistic. "If I could tell the world just one thing/It would be that we're all okay" she sings in "Hands," as a piano shapes the lines of a lullaby. Connecting with the broken-hearted and the socially outcast, Jewel speaks of love and trust, urging those who feel "different" to celebrate their uniqueness. She calls the ostracized title character in "Fat Boy" a "fragile flame," telling him "Sometimes I feel the same," and in "Innocence Maintained" proclaims that "It's time we made a place/Where people's souls may be seen and made safe." Mushy words for such cynical times, but 3 million copies sold says there's still room for in this cold, hard world for that. Suzanne McElfresh, Barnes & Noble

November 06, 2007: "spirit" is jewel's best album as far as i'm concerned. every song is filled with so much meaning, from the life-pondering "deep water" to the longing of "abscence of fear." i may be partial because this is the first jewel record i bought, but since then and since buying the rest of her work, i still believe this is her most cohesive collection of songs. my favorites are "innocence maintained," with a contemplative melody and wise lyrics about society, and "hands." i really loved this whole era of jewel's career, from the songs themselves to the music videos. "spirit" is really the epitome of a self-discovery singer/songwriter album.
