Editorial Reviews

First things first: Yes, you'll be able to dose your next karaoke party with those famous lines about spinning webs of any size when you pop this disc into your sound system. Aerosmith's update on the classic Spidey theme chugs along with gusto, although it doesn't approach the thrills 'n' spills approach of the original song, which also appears here. Admittedly, it's tough to discern exactly how most of the tunes here relate to snaring baddies. Songs such as the Strokes' sensuous "When It Started" and Macy Gray's typically oddball "My Nutmeg Phantasy" (remixed here by Tom Morello) would probably work wonders when Peter Parker (played in this big-screen version by Tobey Maguire) sets his sights on snaring gal pal Mary Jane Watson (Kirsten Dunst) instead. Indeed, while there's a good bit of standard action pic thrashing -- Alien Ant Farm doing "Bug Bites" and Sum 41 turning in an alternate version of "What We're All About" -- this soundtrack provides more than just a pedal-to-the-metal thrill ride. Former Alice in Chains guitarist Jerry Cantrell waxes nicely moody on " She Was My Girl," while Slipknot's Corey Taylor gives a glimpse at the real guy behind the mask on a dark but moving "Brother." Far more three-dimensional than most of its ilk, the soundtrack to Spider-Man should appeal to even diehard arachnophobes -- and maybe even a Woody Allen fan or two. David Sprague, Barnes & Noble
