Editorial Reviews

With their bouncy, electro-funk sound and bold gangsta tales, 8ball & MJG have been reppin' the Dirty South for years. With their 1993 debut, Comin' Out Hard, the Tennessee duo announced their pimped-out, "space age" groove and set the stage for the popularity of other countrified rappers such as Goodie Mob, OutKast, and Ludacris. Now the Southern rap forerunners are back with their fifth album, Space Age 4 Eva. Following the heavily synthesized effects and hood narratives of 1999's In Our Lifetime, Volume 1, 'Ball and G's latest is an electric guitar and drum-machine-heavy dedication to the playalistic good life. On the choppy, DJ Quik-produced "Buck Bounce" and the guitar-accented "At the Club," they rhyme mostly about girls and booze. Hot hip-hop producer Swizz Beatz puts his cartoonish signature on the party anthem "Boom Boom." The album's tightest track, however, is the nostalgic narrative "Thingz," featuring lyrics that advocate safe sex and vocals by Tiny, formerly of Xscape. With their fluid rhymes and pulsing bass lines, 8ball & MJG join rappers below the Mason-Dixon in their mission to elevate hip-hop up, up, and away from grimy urban portraits to a place where barbecues, 40-ounces, and bikini-clad women never go out of style.
