Director Richard Kelly's soundtrack to his hyperactive end-of-the-world satire Southland Tales echoes the filmmaker's schizophrenic vision, relying on alternative rock giants like Jane's Addiction and the Pixies, country legend Waylon Jennings, Northern Soul crooner Bertha Tillman, and bespectacled electronic auteur Moby to flesh out what was originally rumored to be a musical (Sarah Michelle Gellar does do a fine send-up of Britney Spears on "Teen Horniness Is Not a Crime"). While the song choices are fun and quirky (Big Head Todd & the Monsters, really?), it's Moby's score that provides the Southland Tales with the odd weight that resides in the pit of your stomach after viewing the film. Like Michael Andrews, whose work on Kelly's previous film Donnie Darko has sparked countless imitators, Moby is a master of minimalist melodic atmosphere, which is ultimately the glue that bonds this disparate collection of music.
