Produced by Nic Harcourt -- who hosts KCRW's lauded weekday radio show "Morning Becomes Eclectic," which prides itself on blending rock, pop, blues, and jazz and on introducing new artists to the greater Los Angeles area -- Sounds Eclectic collects 14 live recordings originally performed on the program. Like those featured on the show, the artists appearing on the CD span the genres and run from the well established (Beck, Yo-Yo Ma, Willie Nelson) to the on-the-rise (Badly Drawn Boy, Bebel Gilberto, Travis). The Sounds Eclectic disc shares its name with a new weekly two-hour radio show that encapsulates the best of the week on "Morning Becomes..." and is syndicated by PRI to stations nationwide. All profits from the sale of the disc will benefit KCRW and its music programming.
All Music Guide
Sounds Eclectic compiles live, previously unreleased material from the archive of L.A. public radio outlet KCRW and the Nic Harcourt-hosted music program Morning Becomes Eclectic. A Yo-Yo Ma performance on solo cello is a stately enough beginning; played off later selections like the boho ramble of the Dandy Warhols' "Country Leaver" or Supreme Beings of Leisure's electronicized pop, it also illustrates that the title isn't kidding. Elsewhere Beck covers Hank Williams ("Lonesome Whistle"); Willie Nelson gives "Healing Hands of Time" a gentle arrangement for acoustic guitar, accordion, and harmonica; and Montreal's Stars suggest the Notwist with their halting "Going, Going, Gone." Ryuichi Sakamoto's "Energy Flow" closes the collection on a studied, quietly hopeful solo piano note. Sounds Eclectic offers a nice ride through the varied styles and colors of contemporary music, and even puts its proceeds toward continuing support for KCRW. Johnny Loftus
