Tony!Toni!Tone! had a mission, with which they single-handedly reinvigorated R&B in the early 90's. Simple album titles like THE REVIVAL were manifestoes, preparing ears for the Oakland-based trio's re-conquest of territories only trodden by heavies from Motion, Stax, and Hi's golden days. Like their first two hit records, the aptly-titled SONS OF SOUL uses the kind of set-up the legendary JB's had back in the day-- a real string and horn section and real keyboards--to make visceral -feeling music. The energetic "If I had No Loot" (with the SNL Horns) and wistful "Tell Me Mama" (with the Fat Lip Horns) almost clash with the more standard contemporary tunes like "Pillow (Lay Your Head On My)", the saccharine "Anniversary," and the inexplicably mean "My Ex-Girlfriend" (who's a "ho.") Still, there's a sense of unity to the sound and sequence of all the tracks together. Eternal classics like "Leavin'" showcase the smooth vocals and tight, sweeping arrangements that keep the Tony-ies ever-fresh. Martine Bury, Barnes & Noble
