Editorial Reviews

RAGTIME is a huge musical with sky-high aspirations. Based on E. L. Doctorow's novel, RAGTIME weaves a dense tapestry out of the social and political upheavals of the early 20th century. Composer Stephen Flaherty and lyricist Lynn Ahrens's score effects a smorgasbord of period styles -- - Dixieland, vaudeville, waltzes -- - while Terrence McNally's book is populated with historical figures like Henry Ford, Emma Goldman, Harry Houdini, and Stanford White. What shines most brightly on this sprawling double CD are the performances by Brian Stokes Mitchell, Marin Mazzie, and the dazzling Audra McDonald. RAGTIME gives you lots to chew on, so go slowly and savor the delicious beauty of songs like "Your Daddy's Son," "Gliding," and "Wheels of a Dream." David Elliot Cohen, Barnes & Noble
