Editorial Reviews

A honey of a disc, soprano Marie McLaughlin's 1993 Strauss recital with pianist Graham Johnson was cherished by fans of the composer's songs when it was first released for the same reason Strauss himself cherished the soprano voice -- because it was so darned sexy. McLaughlin understands that nearly all Strauss' love songs for sopranos are actually love songs to sopranos, ardently expressive, passionately intense, and above all tremendously excited mash notes to the voice Strauss had such a crush on he married one. McLaughlin's soprano is innocent yet knowing, supple but potent, lean but lush in the right places and never, ever strident, not even in climaxes. Although not a "big" voice in the operatic sense, McLaughlin's soprano has the range, the strength, and the stamina to soar through Strauss' long legato lines, but she wisely restrains herself from trying to turn them into arias with piano accompaniment. Johnson himself is a supportive but by no means demonstrative accompanist, and, like a gentleman, he allows McLaughlin to lead. Anyone who loves great lieder singing will enjoy this disc. Hyperion's sound is very clear and close, but perhaps a bit too dry. James Leonard, All Music Guide
