Editorial Reviews

Welsh baritone Bryn Terfel takes to these songs by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II like a purebred Broadway baby. Although Terfel has a hefty voice -- hearty enough to handle Wagnerian roles -- his full-throated yet unaffected singing makes it sound as if these tunes were written specifically for him. In songs from "Oklahoma!," "South Pacific," "The Sound of Music," and other classics of the American musical theater, Terfel's natural phrasing and clear diction are a model for all those other opera divas and divos out there who want to venture into this repertory. The baritone's large, lovable personality can be heard in every number, but it's the greatness of these standards that comes shining through. And that truly is something wonderful.
