In comparison to 2002's energetic, choir-fueled Speak Those Things: POL Chapter 3, contemporary gospel great Fred Hammond's follow-up is a more intimate, stripped-down call to worship. With guest appearances by R&B star Brian McKnight, gospel vet Marvin L. Winans, and neo-soul hipster Musiq (the latter on an acoustic guitaranchored rendition of Stevie Wonder's "Love's in Need of Love Today"), Somethin' 'Bout Love is Hammond at his most crossover-conscious. While the rousing, holy-ghost stompers of POL Chapter 3 and his unsurpassed Purpose by Design are fewer and farther between, Hammond remains an anointed musical force to reckon with. The quietly stirring "A Closer Walk" will bring tears to anyone desiring a closer connection to their Higher Power, and "I Will Find a Way" -- with its building musical arrangement and dynamic vocals from Hammond and a backing choir -- is bound to become a staple in Baptist churches around the country. The intricately arranged and lyrically evocative "Your Love Is" offers another moving dedication to the Lord. The only criticism of that song and several others is that they're too short and leave the listener longing for more of the gifted singer-songwriter's music ministry -- which is best captured in live, unedited form (see Pages of Life: Chapters 1 & 2). Hammond does, however, stay connected to his traditional gospel roots with interludes of classic hymns including "I Know It Was the Blood," and Somethin' 'Bout Love ends with the powerful, choir-backed "Your Name Is Jesus" -- hopefully signaling that on his next blessed offering, Hammond will return to the dynamic foot-stomping and hand-clapping style he perfected with his choir Radical for Christ.
