Editorial Reviews

To think, when this trio of snot-nosed perpetual adolescents burst on the hip-hop scene more than two decades ago, most folks thought they'd burn out faster than the fuse on a cheap firecracker bought out of a Brooklyn hooligan's trunk. Well, after a few years of juvenile humor and quite a few more spent churning out provocative tunes, it's clear that the Beasties are having the last laugh. This collection, which gleans material from all phases of their career -- well, save for their early days as hardcore punk troublemakers -- and shows that they've remained true to their musical roots, even as they've evolved as people. Unlike The Sounds of Science, Solid Gold Hits focuses on the trio's best-known material, from debauched early anthems like "Fight For Your Right to Party" and "Hey Ladies" to later, more squirrelly efforts such as "Intergalactic" and "Triple Trouble." Proving you can take the boys out of New York City, but you can't take New York City out of the boys, the disc is peppered with hometown homages ranging from the raging "No Sleep 'Til Brooklyn" to the post-9/11 love note "Open Letter to NYC." Diehard fans might quibble with the straightforwardness of the collection, but the inclusion (on some editions of the disc ) of videos for each of the songs makes up for that.
