It's only fair that a kinder, gentler superhero series would have a soundtrack considerably mellower and more thoughtful than most of its modern-day counterparts. Rather than the familiar diet of nü-metal and rap-rock, the soundtrack for the WB network's teen Superman series, Smallville, skips across genre lines, lighting on airy pop -- Sixpence None the Richer's version of the Crowded House fave "Don't Dream It's Over" -- and contagious riff-rock -- like Weezer's "Islands in the Sun" -- with equal grace. Although many of the tunes were previously released, they take on new thematic sensibilities here, particularly the Flaming Lips' trembling, introspective "Fight Test" and Ryan Adams's twist-filled "Nuclear." Perhaps inevitably, the producers couldn't avoid the temptation to latch onto Five for Fighting's somewhat dog-eared "Superman," but beyond that, the material woven into this collection is richly textured and perfectly matched.
