Editorial Reviews

One of acoustic music's most affecting vocalists, John Starling is reunited here with two of his original partners in the legendary progressive bluegrass quintet the Seldom Scene, with which he made his bones: namely, the redoubtable guitarist Mike Auldridge (who makes every record on which he appears better for his presence) and bassist Tom Gray (ditto). This trio is supported on its ten-track debut by, notably, bluegrass giant Jimmy Gaudreau (mandolin, bouzouki), the estimable songwriter/guitarist/vocalist Jon Randall, and fiddler Rickie Simpkins. They work their way gracefully through songs ranging from a breezy rendition of Jimmie Rodgers's "Waitin' for a Train" to a stately reading of the Gram Parsons-Emmylou Harris plea "In My Hour of Darkness" (with harmony vocals by Emmylou herself), as well as a terse, laconic take of Lowell George's "Willin' " and Gillian Welch's acutely observed "The Riverboat Song," rendered as a casual country shuffle. A couple of spirited instrumentals are electrifying interludes amid these songs of trial and tribulation, especially Ricky Skaggs' buoyant "Irish Spring," which is the perfect setup for the closing "Prayer for My Friends," an eloquent coda to a rich musical journey. March 23, 2007: I have been a fan of John Starling's for years now and to have him back with his old friends of the Seldom Scene makes it all complete. I highly recommend this album, HIGHLY!
