There was a sense of excitement, of something new and propitious during the opening credits of SKY CAPTAIN AND THE WORLD OF TOMORROW. This is all the more remarkable because the spine tingling, trumpeting fanfare that begins composer Edward Shearmur's music score for this "retro" adventure movie is so derivative of the classic films of the past. What makes the music and the movie such a joy to hear and see is Sheamur and director Kerry Conran's due respect for classic filmmaking. This mostly computer- generated film works so beautifully because it doesn't condescend to its audience. It respects the traditions of the past while employing the very latest techniques in film production. Shearmur's music superbly underscores the action on screen, from high adventure in the air to earthbound romance in Manhattan and a Shangri-La-like outpost. The soundtrack to SKY CAPTAIN is an achievement in its own right.
