About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

With their short, fast, driving, and tuneful songs, the Buzzcocks were masters of punk-edged power pop. Or was it pop-smoothed punk? Either way, this Manchester trio perfected the three-minute single, cramming each with massive hooks and subject matter ranging from adolescent ribaldry ("Orgasm Addict"), to lovelorn adulthood, as in "What Do I Get" (which asks, "I just want a lover like any other/What do I get?" -- answer: "no love, no sleep at night"). For the most part, lead songwriters Pete Shelley and Howard Devoto are irked, feeding their dismay into songs like "Ever Fallen in Love," "Oh Shit," and "Something's Gone Wrong Again." Singles Going Steady compiles all their late-'70s singles plus some B-sides. Martin Johnson, Barnes & Noble
