About Carly Simon

About Lucy Simon

    Editorial Reviews

Successful singers often turn to children's music when their hits have dried up or after they've matured and had children of their own, but Carly Simon was recording children's music while just a teenager. Her duet act with sister Lucy, the Simon Sisters, notched a small folk hit in 1964 with a version of "Winkin', Blinkin' and Nod" that displayed their intricate close harmonies. Lucy Simon broke up the act when she got married, but they were persuaded to return to the studio five years later (yet before Carly even had a solo contract). The album they produced, Sing the Lobster Quadrille and Other Songs for Children (re-released in 1973 as Sing Songs for Children after Carly's fame), was a delightful collection of songs in the folk mold, set to music by Lucy herself (she was later to become an award-winning composer) and featuring the sisters' close harmonies plus the effervescent arrangements of Sam Brown. The Simons faithfully cover their 1964 hit mentioned above, and shine particularly on songs with a similar familiarity and emphasis on intricate storytelling (which they often do in harmony), such as "The Owl and the Pussycat" and "The Lobster Quadrille."
