Editorial Reviews

British duo Zero 7 aim to prolong the excitement generated by their 2001 debut, the down-tempo burner Simple Things, with this tasty remix platter, a between-courses snack before Sam Hardaker and Henry Binns complete their follow-up. The disc includes two startlingly different versions of "Distractions": Denizens of London's "broken beat" scene, Bugz in the Attic punch up the funk, nodding to both old-school R&B and hip-hop, while California DJ/mixer Madlib takes a heavier, jazzier hand, swirling stuttering organ runs and chiming vibes through buttery beats and Sia Furler's soul-imbued vocals. Amping the funk slightly for his mix of "In the Waiting Line," down-tempo king Richard Dorfmeister heats up Sophie Barker's vocals with a steamy house beat. A cool, airy pulse threads its way through Photek's stripped-down remix of the low-key hit "Destiny," giving the late-night cool-down number aerobics-class potential. The disc closes on an aggressive note with Roni Size's action-packed mix of "End Theme," on which frenetic drum-'n'-bass beats vie with a snarling synth line. The disc's enhanced portion features the striking, 3-D animation video for "Destiny." Lydia Vanderloo, Barnes & Noble
