About Yo-Yo Ma

About Silk Road Ensemble

    Editorial Reviews

In recent years, cellist Yo-Yo Ma has devoted a great deal of time and energy to his ambitious boundary-crossing Silk Road Project, and the resulting collaborations are paying ever-increasing dividends. As many listeners will already know, this project explores the richly interwoven musical cultures along the ancient trade route -- the Silk Road -- between China and Europe; composers and musicians from Iran, India, Turkey, Mongolia, and many of the former Soviet republics of central Asia have all taken part. On Silk Road Journeys: Beyond the Horizon, the music ranges from the traditional to the newly created, even including an evocative group improvisation on the track titled "Oasis." If it occasionally sounds like a film soundtrack, there are two good reasons: First, the music was created for a Japanese television program about the Silk Road, and second, two leading Chinese film composers (Zhao Jiping and Zhao Lin) are responsible for several of the pieces heard here. Jiping's "Summer in the High Grassland," mostly a haunting soliloquy for Ma, is among the most beautiful tracks, and also memorable are two compelling numbers by Iranian composer Kayhan Kalhor: the mesmerizing "Mountains Are Far Away" and the restless "Gallop of a Thousand Horses." All told, this Journey offers a wide variety of musical styles, many of which have their own array of distinctive instrumental sounds (and sometimes the vocals of Alim Qasimov as well). Holding it all together, Ma's eloquent cello blends effortlessly with its surroundings, in meditation and celebration alike, no matter where it stops on the long Silk Road.
