Ann Hampton Callaway is one of the brightest lights on the contemporary cabaret scene. The 42-year-old Chicago native is a genuine triple-threat talent whose nimble keyboard and songwriting skills almost rival her gifts as an interpretive vocal stylist. With Signature, the smoky-voiced alto has created her most compelling and accomplished album yet. Conceived as a tribute to the classic singers who most deeply influenced Callaway's approach to the Great American Songbook, Signature is an inspired collection of standards identified with one-of-a-kind singers like Sarah Vaughan, Nat King Cole, Tony Bennett, Frank Sinatra, and Peggy Lee, among others. Callaway is clearly in clover on the luxuriously romantic "Tenderly," the swinging road trip "Route 66," a jazzy and charming "The Best Is Yet to Come," of the Morning." Signature virtually consists of highlights, but Callaway's spirited scatting on Ella Fitzgerald's "Mr. Paganini" and Mel Tormé's "Pick Yourself Up," as well as a truly devastating take on Billie Holiday's "Good Morning Heartache," are more than enough reason to make this a must-own disc. On her seventh album, a varied collection of standards and novelty numbers, Ann Hampton Callaway is joined once again by jazz heavyweights: Kenny Barron on piano, Rodney Jones on guitar, Ben Wolfe on bass, and Lewis Nash (or Neal Smith) on drums. Callaway's voice falls somewhere between jazz and Broadway, which can be a liability on weighty ballads like "Good Morning, Heartache" and "For All We Know" (Freddy Cole joins her on the latter). But her feel for swing is convincing ("You Turned the Tables on Me," "A Kiss to Build a Dream On," "The Best Is Yet to Come") and her scatting is seasoned and adroit ("Mr. Paganini," the elaborate "Pick Yourself Up"). Wynton Marsalis and Frank Wess turn in a number of understated solos; the vocal group New York Voices does some nice horn-section simulation on "Route 66" and "Twisted." David R. Adler
