Editorial Reviews

This crowd-pleasing live concert from a Tokyo hall united keyboard diva Martha Argerich, fiddler Gidon Kremer, and cellist Mischa Maisky. Their well-chosen program features Shostakovich's characterful Trio No. 2, which sounds at times like a bunch of old friends hanging out together and kibitzing. Kremer expresses like no other violinist the combination of wry astringency and violent energy needed here. Tchaikovsky's Trio Op. 50 is romantically expansive and lingering, with Argerich as emotionally driven as usual. A burlesque tango version of the Russian song "O Chichornya" by Kiesewetter ends this program wittily. The trio certainly earned applause, but what listener is so skeptical as to need to hear it before the music starts? The proof is in the playing. Benjamin Ivry, Barnes & Noble
