Shirley & Lee were responsible for a few enduring classics of New Orleans rock & roll, particularly "Let the Good Times Roll," which topped the R&B charts and crossed over to the pop Top 20 in 1956. Shirley Goodman's helium voice is simply unforgettable, and her partner, Leonard Lee, was a talented teenage songwriter. The Legendary Master Series, Vol. 1 is a reissue of a deleted 1991 anthology, and contains all of the duo's Aladdin hits and more with extensive notes and annotation. Serious collectors may wish to seek out Bear Family's four-disc box set of Shirley & Lee's complete Aladdin recordings, but most buyers will be content with this excellent distillation.
