Editorial Reviews

This two-fer assembles a pair of classic Jack Jones sessions first issued on Kapp Records in the mid-'60s. She Loves Me teams Jones with arranger Jack D. Elliot for the sweetest, sunniest record in the crooner's Kapp catalog. Inspired by bossa nova and related Brazilian rhythms and textures, the music captures Jones at his most effervescent, with a soulfulness absent from his more traditional ballad sessions. The breezy appeal of cuts like "My Mood Is You," "Our Language of Love" and "The Lamp Is Low" contrasts with the emotional resonance of Jones' vocals; even at his most poignant, he remains a nimble stylist, navigating the supple curves and contours of the melodies with sophistication and grace. There's Love & There's Love & There's Love pairs the singer with the immortal arranger Nelson Riddle for a dizzyingly romantic collection of ballads as light and gentle as a summer rain. With their perfectly placed French horns, trombones and flutes, Riddle's arrangements eloquently complement the cut-marble sophistication of Jones' vocals. Both collaborators are masters of understatement, and their emphasis on subtly and atmosphere illuminate well-chosen material like "Young at Heart," "A Lovely Way to Spend an Evening" and "And I Love Her."
