This high-octane tribute to ZZ Top gives a group of top country artists the chance to offer rock 'n' roll props to the rowdy Texas trio, whose approach has helped shape the up-tempo sound of today's mainstream country. A medley of "Jesus Just Left Chicago/Waitin' for the Bus" allows Hank Williams Jr. to dip into the stomping blues-rock that he's favored on his own records. Hank III, meanwhile, comes out with both barrels blazing on "Fearless Boogie," which rocks without mercy and gains an edge via Hank's unsettling phased vocal. In "I'm Bad, I'm Nationwide," Dwight Yoakam melds Texas boogie with the hard edge of Bakersfield country to create the album's most memorable track. Willie Nelson transforms "She Loves My Automobile" into a jubilant western swing shuffle that would make Bob Wills smile. And Alan Jackson contributes the 12-bar blues of "Sure Got Cold After the Rain Fell," which he ultimately kicks into hoedown overdrive in a scintillating and seamless blues-country segue. Lonestar, Brad Paisley, Brooks & Dunn, Phil Vassar, and Trace Adkins are among the other country stalwarts lending their hot hands to this top-notch tribute to everyone's favorite bearded band.
