Editorial Reviews

An excellent cool-toned trumpeter and arranger/composer, Jack Millman led three albums during 1955-1957. This CD reissues all of the 1957 Liberty record Shades of Things to Come and has six of the dozen selections from the 1955 Decca album Jazz Studio 4. Since the total playing time is only 48 minutes, it is a pity that all of the latter record was not included, too. Millman is teamed with a variety of West Coast all-stars, with prominent roles played by clarinetist Jimmy Giuffre (who doubles on baritone) and Buddy Collette on flute, alto, and tenor. This swinging but obscure set is easily recommended to fans of 1950s cool jazz. Scott Yanow, All Music Guide
