About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

This CD made Haza a household name throughout Europe because it was her first to sell millions of copies there, earning her the nickname "the Israeli Madonna." She combines Hebrew, Yemenite, and English in prayers and original compositions with a driving European dance beat. Included is the international hits "Im Nin Alu" and "Galbi" (later made famous after rap stars Eric B. & Rakim sampled it for one of their hits). It's also available domestically on Sire with bonus remixes of the above tracks. Phil Fink, All Music Guide

June 19, 2007: I first heard Im Nin'Alu on GTA: Liberty City Stories last night, and instantly fell in love with this song! She sounds so much like Madonna!

April 23, 2006: I first encountered Ofra Haza as a kid while snooping through my mother's extensive cd collection one rainy afternoon. The album cover intrigued me, and I decided to play it to see what it was all about. I was blown away. Who knew my mother listened something I liked to listen to??? Ofra's voice captivated me, and 'til this day, I have held that Ofra's voice was, and is, the most beautiful in the world. It is pure, full of passion, and full of a charming Israeli accent that reaches impressive heights. Ofra's ability to sing (successfully) such a variety of songs, from ethnic to pop, is crucial to her unique success. I personally like 80's music, but the Middle Eastern twist on most of the songs, along with the dance beats on songs like Im Nin Alu, make for an enduring, unique cd that Ofra, may she rest in peace, will continue to live through. There is no one else like her, and calling her "the Israeli Madonna" is to miss the spirituality, grace, and talent that Ofra exuded.
