Reba follows up her 1990 Christmas collection, Merry Christmas to You, which went double platinum, with this collection of heartfelt holiday favorites. A mix of original songs and classics like "I Saw Mama Kissing Santa Claus" and "Santa Claus Is Coming Back to Town" (done as Western swing dancefloor shuffles), the album also gives a taste of Reba's upcoming TV movie. Also called The Spirit of Giving, the movie includes three songs from the disc. Standout tracks include the dramatic pop ballad "Mary, Did You Know?" and a barn-burning honky-tonk version of "Up on the Housetop" that rivals the energy of the Jackson 5 version. No country Christmas should be without it.

Reba McEntire's second Christmas album is a departure from 1988's Merry Christmas to You. Secret of Giving features more down-to-earth, pop-country tracks that reflect her decidedly contemporary country style of the '90s. Cheerful and sincere, McEntire shows her usual eloquence on songs like "This Christmas," "Up on the Housetop," "This Is My Prayer for You," and "The Angels Sang."
