Editorial Reviews

Volume 5 of The Secret Museum of Mankind series is an outstanding compilation of early international phonograph and gramophone recordings. In the span of 24 tracks, the producer of this series, Pat Conte, manages to introduce musical cultures from South America (Peru and Argentina), North America (Mississippi), Africa (French Guinea, Rhodesia, Lesotho, Malawi), Asia (India, Siam), the Middle East (Syria), Europe (Finland, Ukraine), and points in between and beyond. From a 1920s recording of an Indian brother duo -- one an accomplished mandolin player and the other a virtuoso on the jalatarang (a series of porcelain cups tuned by adjusting their water levels) -- to a non-dated recording of a blues pan pipe player from Mississippi, the entirety of this CD spans a wide selection of musical genres and stands as another example of The Secret Museum's valuable contribution to both historical preservation and the production of great music.
