Dream Theater has an amazing way of satisfying their many fans with live recordings. Score: XOX is a prime example: there are three discs here. The first one is the band at their live, crackling best, playing tunes from throughout their now-lengthy career -- for a metal band -- and including a pair of smoking unreleased cuts in the mix. First there is "Root of All Evil," and "I Walk Beside You," and rounding that are "Innocence Faded," and "Afterlife." The two new cuts, are both hard, riff heavy, labyrinthine journeys that reveal the best in progressive metal. "Another Won," feels more like a suite in its nearly six-minute length, with more parts than one can count easily; next is the drifting, strange and beautiful "Raise the Knife," that is as closely driven to every edge. The set ends with the gorgeous, nearly spiritual anthem "The Spirit Carries On." Discs two and three are the real treats, though, as they feature the band playing its long compositions -- "Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence," "Sacrificed Sons," "Octavarium" (of course), and the roiling, sci-fi metal of "Metropolis," with the Octavarium orchestra, which is 29-pieces strong, conducted by Jill Dell'Abate. The ability the band has to make the orchestra sound like part of its everyday concert experience is nothing less than thrilling.; the sound is top-notch, and there are no excessive parts -- Dream Theater always take care of that on their own. November 10, 2007: Dream Theater has been the world's premier progressive rock band for 20 years, and this may be the best rockumentary ever made. John Petrucci, the guitarist, and John Myung, the bassist, went to Berkley and ran into drummer Mike Portnoy. They practiced until their fingers bled while listening to Rush, Metallica, Sabbath, Yes, Genesis, and Gentle Giant. They incorporated jazz and classical music, using every trick in the book to make complex and elaborate rock that blended many of the best bands of the 80's and eventually developed their own unique style and sound. With the addition of Jordan Rudess on keyboards and James Labrie on vocals, the line-up was complete and they started to tour and make some of the greatest albums in history.They refused to listen to the labels demands for three minute radio friendly hits and kept on writing long, complex songs with lots of solos that some people find pretentious or even boring at times. Their faithful fans, myself included, appreciate the longer songs and revel in the incredible beauty and majesty of their compositions, especially the unbelievable guitar work of John Petrucci. Few guitarists on earth can match his talent for writing beautiful and elaborate songs that are also enduring and timeless. Some of their best songs were from older albums like Images and Words, and this DVD contains some of their very best material spanning the last 15 years. They could have been more successful if they sold out and played by the label's rules, listened to producers who wanted shorter pop tunes, and got on the almighty radio, but they have never given up their desire to create the best music, not the most popular. No other band has ever written so many incredible songs that you could listen to over and over again and not get sick of, and that's because they are the most talented musicians on the planet. Every one of heir concerts that I have seen over the years has been incredible, including their Darien Lake concert last summer. Their Radio Music Hall concert was one of the best I have ever seen, with people coming from all over the world to witness the event. If you have never seen one of their shows, buy this DVD and listen to it with headphones, and you will instantly become a fan of the world's best rock band.
