For at least three decades, baritone Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau was the undisputed master interpreter of the German art song. Now we have a successor: Matthias Goerne, a sonorous young baritone of keen musical intelligence who has the ability to communicate the often subtle enchantments of this vast repertory. Goerne's gifts are manifest in these magical interpretations of two great song-cycles by Robert Schumann. One of the first great composers to recognize Schubert's genius and to build upon his legacy in this relatively new form, Schumann's songs are impulsive and improvisatory. "Dichterliebe" (A Poet's Love), based on poetry by Heinrich Heine, shifts quickly from intense longing to acrimonious irony and beyond as the protagonist tells us of his lost love. Goerne also gives us the first book of "Liederkreis," again based on Heine's poetry -- though no story is told in this set of nine songs. The great expatriate Russian musician Vladimir Ashkenazy provides Goerne with deeply poetic but firm support in the intricate and beautiful piano parts. Andrew Farach-Colton, Barnes & Noble
