For those who enjoy the dynamism and spontaneity of a live performance but hate to sacrifice the sound quality and precision of a studio recording, this CD of the great Schubert String Quintet is for you. The disc pairs wonder-cellist Yo-Yo Ma with the Cleveland Quartet, one of the finest chamber ensembles to have come along in the last thirty years. For this recording, the musicians insisted on playing the entire work until they got a "perfect" take; no high-tech splicing would do this time. And if any piece deserves such a principled approach, it's the Schubert Quintet. With its orchestral richness (aided by the addition of a second cello) and delicate lyricism, this quintet -- one of Schubert's last works -- is beloved by players and audiences alike. The boisterous scherzo movement and driving, Hungarian-style finale will set your heart racing, but best of all is the profound slow movement which begins with a whisper so intimate that it will take your breath away.
