Editorial Reviews

Considering that Schubert himself didn't really believe in the texts he was setting, it's remarkable how credible so much of his sacred music is. But considering that Schubert himself was probably the greatest melodist of all the great composers, it's equally remarkable how forgettable so much of his sacred music is. Even in these dedicated and deeply musical performances by Wolfgang Sawallisch leading a stellar casts of soloists and musicians, most of Schubert's sacred music remains well-meaning and well-written composition exercises. From the light and lyrical early "Mass in G major" through the massive and monumental late "Mass in E flat major," Sawallisch and his singers and players do their best to bring power and grace and expressivity to Schubert's sacred music, but more often than not the results are dedicated but uninspired. There are touches of Schubert's genius in nearly every work, but not nearly enough as almost any work. EMI's remastered sound is rounder and warmer than the original digital reissues, but not as round and as warm as the LP issues. James Leonard, All Music Guide
