For his debut recording for the French Harmonia Mundi label, English pianist Paul Lewis chose two of Schubert's piano sonatas. He didn't choose any of Schubert's happy, lyrical major-key sonatas; he chose two minor-key sonatas: the darkly Beethovenian "C minor Sonata, D. 958," and the even bleaker "A minor Sonata, D. 784." They proved inspired choices. A pianist with a big tone, a strong technique, a clear mind, and a passionate heart, Lewis picked these works to showcase his best qualities.
And it worked. His "C minor Sonata" is muscular, driven, and probing with stalwart opening and closing Allegros and a central Adagio that plumbs the depths. Even better is Lewis' grim account of the "A minor Sonata" filled to the brim with bitterness and wormwood. Captured in clean, vivid digital sound, this disc introduced a terrific new pianist to an international public, and its reissue on Harmonia Mundi's mid-priced Musique d'abord series will serve to reintroduce the pianist to those who missed him the first time around.
