Renaud Capuçon and Jérôme Ducros seem to be having the times of their lives on this disc of three Schubert works for violin and piano. In the Rondo brilliant, Capuçon delivers a performance of stunning virtuosity, leavened with tremendous wit. In the Grand Duo, he turns in a reading of scintillating sparkle and exhilarating verve, and his account of the large-scale single-movement Fantasy grips the emotions from the first bars until the last. Some listeners might find Capuçon's tone a tad too sinewy, and his velocity too facile. For listeners who don't require large quantities of vibrato and a stern visage in their Schubert, however, Capuçon's interpretations will be enjoyable and satisfying. Ably supported by Ducros, whose richly textured but buoyant accompaniments mark him as an apt and expert Schubertian, Capuçon's performance deserves to be heard by any fan of this music.
