About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

In one of the pleasant surprises of this season, the artist formerly known as Ginger Spice acquits herself well on her debut solo recording. Halliwell has gone to great lengths to distance herself from the platforms and ponytails of her Spice Girl persona, such as the humanitarian work that earned her goodwill ambassador status with the United Nations. Halliwell aimed for SCHIZOPHONIC to be equal parts Julie Andrews and Johnny Rotten; she winds up sounding like TRUE BLUE-era Madonna, which means she's right on target. The recording is short (barely 40 minutes) and smartly conceived, with Halliwell's limited voice kept within a comfortable range. Instead, the singer is surrounded by diverse, often self-consciously campy productions. Several songs -- especially the swinging London-styled single "Look at Me" -- sound like they could be the basis for a theatrical production, while others feature Latin ("Chico Latino") and East Indian ("Let Me Love You") influences. While none of this deserves a place in the canon of great contemporary pop, SCHIZOPHONIC rather firmly puts Ginger Spice to rest and creates a solid introduction for Ms. Geri Halliwell. January 14, 2001: Geri's solo album, Schizophonic, was a good CD. The songs were creative and mostly well-written, however she puts some odd beats in there (breathing LOUDLY in wrong places). Over all I was pleased with this album and will continue to listen to it until her next one, coming in August 2001.
