About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

Like most bands that hail from their neck of the woods, Hootie & the Blowfish started life as a bar band, playing places that demand lots of covers played lots of ways, an order reflected in this disc's Waffle House-inspired title. But while most of their peers quickly washed their hands of those days, Darius Rucker and company have always shown a lingering fondness for them, trotting out odd covers that often became concert highlights -- songs that now become the meat and potatoes of this 15-song set. Scattered, Smothered and Covered is Hootie's way to dust off some old favorites and, in the process, give fans a good look at their roots, which branch out in directions as varied as R.E.M. (whose "Driver 8" gets a chugging run-through here) and Led Zeppelin (represented by a surprisingly muscular "Hey, Hey What Can I Do"). While some of the stretches are a bit too tough to take -- Rucker can't make heads or tails of the Smiths' moping "Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want" -- the band should be commended for emphasizing good songs, including two from Austin's underrated Reivers, over easily recognizable ones. It's a fine listen, even without a watery draft beer in hand. David Sprague, Barnes & Noble

March 06, 2001: I think this was a nice tribute to the artists they covered. I am a BIG R.E.M. fan and I was very pleased with ''Driver 8''. I know the guys are big fans as well. I also enjoyed ''Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want''. Darius has such a warm, lovely, liquered voice. Araby is a great little tune. This is good driving music, so if you take a summer trip, grab this CD and enjoy the ride :)

October 25, 2000: From the opening chord of ''Fine Line,'' any listener should see this is a great classic\pop rock album. Rucker and Co. take the radio format of ''Cracked Rear View,'' the edgy-ness of ''Fairweather Johnson,'' and the style of ''Musical Chairs'' and throw the ingredients into a well-picked mix of covers. Throughout the course of the record - each song almost becomse a Hootie origina...a tough feat for most bands. Rucker continues to shine as a singer and frontman - his R&B flavored baritone soars throughout the album. Mark Byran's always tasteful guitar work as well as the Felbar/Sonefeld rythm section support the strong vocals of Rucker. Forget the naysayers - buy this album, pop in into your car CD player, and take a long ride with the windows down. Bring plenty of water - your throat may get dry from the all the sing alongs.
