About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

Sax Education gathers 12 tracks culled from James Chance's late-'70s and early-'80s albums on ZE and Animal, Buy the Contortions, Off White, Sax Maniac, and Flaming Demonics. These essential selections were chosen by Chance himself and are highly recommended to casual fans. For the dedicated fanatic, the real treat is the bonus disc that captures a never-before-released live set by Chance and his band for Radio Holland in 1981. Even though Chance was touring Europe at the time with a minuscule lineup consisting of mainly pickup musicians not completely familiar with the tunes, this Einhoven set is brutal, especially the versions of "Sax Maniac," "Contort Yourself," and James Brown's "King Heroin." Listening to these live tracks proves once and for all that James Chance was way ahead of his time and obviously the progenitor of today's funk-punk-free jazz hybrid. Les Campbell, All Music Guide
