The MTV movie Save the Last Dance is a let's-root-for-the-underdog tale in the tradition of campy dance flicks such as Flashdance and Footloose. And like those films, Dance is powered not only by its protagonist's noble quest to dance by any means necessary but also by a rousing, toe-tapping soundtrack that captures the film's carefree spirit. After a family tragedy, Sara, a white aspiring ballerina, finds herself in inner city Chicago, where she's introduced to hip-hop dancing and the urban music behind it. Thus, she's exposed to reggae, R&B, and hip-hop dance floor favorites such as Chaka Demus & Pliers' bombastic "Murder She Wrote," Montell Jordan's smooth "Get It on Tonite," and Q-Tip's infectious "Breathe and Stop," all included on the accompanying soundtrack. The disc also features several new songs, such as newcomer Athena Cage's inspiring "All or Nothing" and Fredro Starr (who costars in the film) and Jill Scott's soulful "Save the Last Dance" theme, which borrows its chorus from Cyndi Lauper's sentimental '80s classic "True Colors." With an assortment of radio-friendly and club-ready songs, this soundtrack will definitely make you feel like dancin'. Tracy E. Hopkins, Barnes & Noble
