Editorial Reviews

To some, the Brothers Gibb are a punch line. But this steamy, almost unrelenting album -- it spent nearly half a year at the No. 1 spot on the charts, spawned four No. 1 singles, and sold more than 25 million copies -- argues against such a glib dismissal. Sure, the disco onslaught the band sparked did become mechanical, decadent, even silly in some cases. But Saturday Night Fever is disco's finest hour, with daring, unusual songs; expansive, illuminating production; and unwavering ear-to-the-dance-floor grooves. More than twenty years later, "Stayin' Alive" -- silky guitar line, processed vocals, head-snapping beat and all -- sounds sharp and arresting, "Night Fever" feels restrained and taut, and "How Deep Is Your Love" stands as one of disco's classiest ballads. The album is filled out with a few other disco hits, including Walter Murphy's "A Fifth of Beethoven," K.C. and the Sunshine Band's "Boogie Shoes," and, best of all, the steamy, 11-minute version of the Tramps' immortal "Disco Inferno." Burn, baby, burn. Bill Wyman, Barnes & Noble
