Upon its release, Sap was a revelation, a seemingly tossed-off EP of four mostly acoustic ballads (augmented with a goofy bonus track) that threw Alice in Chains' melodic gifts into stunning relief while exposing a gentler, more melancholy side of their sound, something that Facelift never even hinted at. The mood is still bleak, but not affectedly so, as was sometimes the case on Facelift. There's a newfound maturity in the subtlety and confessional introspection of the first four songs, whose somber beauty is unfortunately dispelled by the bonus track (in a different context, it might be idiotic fun, but it really doesn't fit here). Still, Sap served notice that there was a great deal more depth to Alice in Chains than their debut had let on, hinting at the potential that would be realized with Dirt. Steve Huey, All Music Guide

December 31, 2002: Sap was a huge and unprecedented step forward from the metallic LP Facelift. That doesn't mean Alice in Chains was only good when they were playing acoustic-based ballads, but Sap's four listed tracks are honest, gorgeous, easily likeable songs. Staley's voice is quite soft and soothing in the hit "Got Me Wrong" and the achingly gorgeous "Am I Inside;" Cantrell also does a great job on lead vocals in "Brother." Sap's sound is crisp and clear, as is the band's direction and their intent, so that Sap marks the point where Alice in Chains really found purpose in their music and went on to crystallize it their future work.

December 17, 2002: SAP is one of those albulms that provides a band to become "creative" with there music. Providing that they are able to pull off with something different, and be successful at the same time. SAP definitly does this at the same time, and advances further than one could have expected. Despite the lack of songs, the CD is a masterpiece of acoustic, somber, type music. "Got Me Wrong" and "Brother" are definitly the highlights of the albulm. While it was not supposed to break the charts as it did (Most EP'S dont), this EP helped to establish the talent that is Alice in Chains. Probably the only defecient item within this CD is the last song, which, while seeming to be a joke, does not go along with the smooth melody of the CD. Still, this deserves a 5 star rating, especially for the song "Got Me Wrong".
