About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

Larry Hall's "Sandy" is a fine self-released pop/rock single that became a regional hit on the West Coast, got picked up by the Strand label, and went on to make the national Top 15 in 1960. Sandy: A Golden Classics Edition adds 17 tracks to Hall's sole hit, and the light tone of "Sandy" is heard throughout his recordings. Hall's sound is even more mild-mannered than Ricky Nelson and sometimes approaches the delicacy of the Fleetwoods. The recordings are professional productions but with less-crisp fidelity than major-label recordings, and, although there are no lost classics, the songs are good in general. Worthy of specific mention is "I Didn't Ask to Be Born," the ultimate teen lament and possibly the whiniest plaint ever to emit from the mouth of a teen idol. Greg Adams, All Music Guide
