Editorial Reviews

The Clash sounded like they could do anything on London Calling. For its triple-album follow-up, Sandinista!, they tried to do everything, adding dub, rap, gospel, and even children's choruses to the punk, reggae, R&B, and roots rock they already were playing. Instead of presenting a band with a far-reaching vision, like London Calling did, Sandinista! plays as a messy, confused jumble, which means that its numerous virtues are easy to ignore. Amid all the dub experiments, backward tracks, unfinished songs, and instrumentals, there are a number of classic Clash songs that rank among the band's best, including "Police on My Back," "The Call Up," "Somebody Got Murdered," "Charlie Don't Surf," "Hitsville U.K.," and "Lightning Strikes (Not Once but Twice)," yet it's difficult for anyone but the most dedicated listeners to find them. A few of the failed ideas were worth exploring, but even more -- like the children's choir version of "Career Opportunities" or the Terry Doggs song "Lose This Skin" -- weren't even worth pursuing. As the cliché says, there's a great single album within these three records, and those songs make Sandinista! worthwhile. Nevertheless, its sloppy attack is disheartening after the tour de force of London Calling and the focused aggression of The Clash. [In 2000 Columbia/Legacy reissued, remastered, and restored the artwork for Sandinista!] Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide

October 06, 2006: It's kinda funny how much of a lasting impact this album has had on Clash fans. It got slammed in the press when it came out. That's probably because most music journalists are lazy gits - like the one above complaining about how it takes a 'dedicated fan' to find the best songs on the album. This record is a fantastic journey & tucks away some of the Clash's coolest songs - hidden nuggets that stun you with their head-shaking inventiveness. I always turn to Sandanista when making compilation CDs for friends and they often have no idea who the band is. The bagpipes on "lose this skin" at the end send shivers. "One More Dub" is sui generis and "Kingston Advice" gets me pumped up and feeling perfect. "Up in Heaven" transports you into the dark confines of a steel mill with a sense of mystery and blue collar desperation. I love playing "Hitsville U.K." in a barroom jukebox after work on a Friday. "Silicone on Sapphire" surpasses expectation and "The Street Parade" is one of Strummer's most touching songs and casts a light on his soul. I know most of these titles are unfamiliar to most, but that makes them even more immortal. "Sandanista" also included one of the most creative lyric sheets of all time, handwritten lyrics and nifty little drawings that drew you into the guts of this eclectic trip even further (try and find the original vinyl version!) and shows you how prolific Joe was under even the most claustraphobic of circumstances. This album shows why the Clash are remembered so fondly they trancended their time and place and "Sandanista" proves they will resonate long after current pretenders have been dismantled. Keep an open mind and you'll fall in love with this monumental achievement. Don't let the detractors spoil the fun. As Capt. Beefheart once said “ONE COLD VIBE WON’T STOP THIS HERE BOOGIE !”
