The Irish Tenors are back, and despite a personnel change and a shift toward a more diverse array of musical styles, their crowd-pleasing appeal remains intact on Sacred: A Spiritual Journey. That's partly because the change in the trio's lineup is not only a departure -- Ronan Tynan has left to focus on his solo career -- but also a homecoming: Original member John McDermott has returned to the group, joining colleagues Anthony Kearns and Finbar Wright for this album of inspirational favorites. Sometimes singing solo, more often blending in harmony, the tenors naturally include some Irish-tinged material ("Hail Glorious St. Patrick"), but elsewhere they range from the Gregorian chant of "Deus Meus" and "Salve Regina," through songs associated with Stevie Wonder ("My Love"), Mahalia Jackson ("If I Can Help Somebody"), and Cat Stevens ("Morning Has Broken"), to the more contemporary Christian sounds of "How Deep the Father's Love." The album reaches one high point with a moving interpretation of "Amazing Grace," and another with the soaring "Lord of the Dance" (which adds Celtic touches to the Shaker hymn tune "Simple Gifts"), but there's something here for anyone who's looking for soul-stirring music sung with an irresistible Irish lilt.
