About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

By his own estimation, the Congolese guitar sorcerer François Luambo Makiadi -- Franco, as he is known to all and sundry -- recorded more than 150 albums and wrote in excess of 1,000 songs; his band OK Jazz (later known as "Tout Puissant" [the Almighty] OK Jazz) recorded three times that number before Franco's death in 1989 at the age of 51. Where to begin, then, to appreciate the guitar colossus? The estimable Rough Guides provides a sorely needed entrée into the world of Franco with this 12-song chronological set. From the get-go, "Merengue," recorded when Franco was 17, his preternaturally piquant skills are evident. These are songs that set the blueprint for soukous and launched the careers of sidemen such as Sam Mangwana, originally a singer in Franco's rival Tabu Ley Rochereau's ensemble and represented here on "Où Est Le Sérieux?" The sequence allows listeners to appreciate Franco's innovative arrangements, especially his stretching of the sebene, the instrumental break hallmarked by spiraling guitar solos, over ever-longer tracks. Noting the hits -- from "Infidelite Mado" to Franco's swan song, the AIDS-consciousness anthem "Attention Na SIDA" -- and rarities, such as the accordion-kissed "Likambo Ya Ngana," makes this installment of the Rough Guide a perfect starting point for exploring the cosmic groove of Africa's most popular music, and the man who made it what it is today.
