It doesn't take a genius to find magnificent material among the many Broadway and Hollywood productions of the past century. But Michael Feinstein has nonetheless done a fine job of collecting sparkling gems from the theatrical and cinematic realms. If fact, all of the tunes are well-known standards, including Irving Berlin's "They Say It's Wonderful" and "Always," Johnny Mercer's "Something's Gotta Give," Rodger's and Hart's "Isn't It Romantic" and "My Funny Valentine," and Victor Young's "When I Fall in Love" and "My Foolish Heart." Feinstein, ever the sensitive interpreter, handles each with care, eliciting the most from their memorable melodies and finely honed lyrics. Feinstein gets first-class assistance from guests pianists Marian McPartland and Page Cavanaugh, and excellent jazz players including guitarist Bucky Pizzarrelli, pianist Alan Broadbent, bassist Jay Leonhardt, and saxophonist Gary Foster. (Feinstein also gives himself sympathetic piano accompaniment on a few tunes.) It's obvious that Feinstein, long a committed champion of the great American songbook repertoire, is in his element here -- literally, some of the tracks were recorded live at his Manhattan club, Feinstein's at the Regency Hotel -- and the comfort he both takes and imparts from these songs is palpable.
