Truth is sometimes stranger than fiction, which helps explain the jaw-dropping tale spun in this reality-based flick and illuminated by its partially vintage, partially re-created soundtrack. The rags-to-riches story -- a slightly embellished take on the career of Tim "Ripper" Owens, who went from cover band obscurity to fronting Judas Priest -- is best encapsulated in the half-dozen tracks by Rock Star's fictional supergroup, Steel Dragon, made up of real metal all-stars, including Zakk Wylde and Jason Bonham. Walking the line between head-banging fury (which spills from the balls-to-the-wall "Blood Pollution") and Bic-flicking power balladry (see the overwrought "We All Die Young"), Dragon revel in the self-indulgent excess of the '80s. In addition, you'll find a sprinkling of chart hits from the big-hair era -- Kiss's "Lick It Up" and Mötley Crüe's "Wild Side" being the most telling -- as well as solid (but slightly misplaced) offerings from '90s rockers Everclear and the Verve Pipe. If you've been looking for a bookend for that Spinal Tap soundtrack for ages, your search is, at long last, over. David Sprague, Barnes & Noble

September 29, 2002: I have never in my whole life seen such an amazing movie. Not only the movie but the soundtrack was truely inspiring. It was a relief to hear the same music I grew up to getting the respect it longfully deserved. It was nice to hear music that you can understand and relate to versus new age metal. I think that Mark Wahlberg played his character to profection and he has never been so inspirational.
