Editorial Reviews

Holland's Collector Records specializes in 1950s rockabilly, R&B and rock & roll, and the label's various anthologies document the initial explosion of these musical forms around the globe. Rock, Rock, Rockin' Tonight is a little bit more left of center than some of the other collections from the label, featuring such bizarre sides as Pete Peters' attempt at rockabilly banjo in "Rocking Banjo," the strange, disconnected (and almost proto-industrial) "Summer" by Perry Wilson & the Glows, and the slightly off-center sliding rhythm of the set opener, "Left Behind" by LaVerne Stovall. "Night Time Honk" by D.G. Williams & the Delta Raiders is a particular delight. Williams, who sounds eerily like Bruce Springsteen twenty-some years early, delivers as true a description of the teenage predicament as you'll ever hear: "But when I come home drinking/I get in trouble with my Mom." None of the tracks collected here ever saw more than regional success, if that, and the extreme rarity and obscurity of most of them makes this anthology a treasure trove for serious collectors of the era.
