About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

Having released their first album in 1995, Supergrass have gone from snotty upstarts to one of the most successful, respected bands in Britpop. And as none of the members has yet reached his 30th birthday (for some perspective, singer Gaz Coombs is four years younger than Franz Ferdinand's Alex Kapranos), they can still sing the chorus ("We are young!") of their decade-old hit, "Alright," with a clear conscience. And while Supergrass' hyperactive days may be behind them, Road to Rouen is as ambitious, confident, and rewarding as anything they've ever done. There's still an abundance of catchy pop -- see "Sad Girl," "Kick in the Teeth," and the swaggering "St. Petersburg" -- but the band also find room to stretch their creative wings on tracks like the glittery epic "Roxy" and the sprawling, bluesy opener, "Tales of Endurance (Parts 4, 5 & 6)," which swipes more than a little from Led Zeppelin's "Trampled Under Foot." And the rather lovely "Low C" finds them downright reflective and, gulp, mature. You can't survive on youthful bravado forever, and, as Road to Rouen shows, Supergrass won't have to. February 09, 2009: This album is one of few I can sit and listen to the entire thing without putting something else on. The music has a classic sound with an urban new feel.

I Also Recommend: Rings Around the World [Bonus Disc].
