RISING SON is both a tribute to the classic Chicago blues sound of Muddy Waters and an introduction to an important new blues figure - - Waters's son, Big Bill Morganfield. Although Big Bill uses some of his father's sidemen - - pianist Pinetop Perkins, drummer Willie "Big Eyes" Smith and guitarist Bob Margolin (who also produced the set) -- and covers songs associated with Waters, Morganfield's own artistic identity comes through loud and clear. On his original title song, Morganfield's resonant voice and accompanying slide guitarwork are big and blue as he gives tough testimony on being the child of a legend. Morganfield also covers tunes that his father either wrote or recorded, giving them his own flavor. "Champagne and Reefer" is a good-time party number, while the Willie Dixon-penned "The Same Thing" gets transformed into sexual heat as steamy as an August night in Mississippi. Big Bill Morganfield has spent years coming to this debut CD, supporting himself and his family as a teacher while he taught himself his daddy's legacy. RISING SON was worth the wait.
