March 19, 2002: The sound of melodic flutes, electronic keyboards and the sharp tunes of guitar strings?.ON A RAP ALBUM! That?s right, many critics pan hip-hop for relying on sampling and lacking originality. These critics haven?t listened to DJ Quik?s opus RHYTMALISM. Without a doubt one of the greatest albums to ever come from the left coast and definitely David Blake?s greatest tracks yet. Along with his crew consisting of El Debarge, AMG and 2ng II None, the Compton emcee/producer shows why he gets the respect he deserves. Album tracks such as ?So Many Wayz?, ?We Still Party? and ?Whateva U Do? showcase Quik?s unbelievable productions skills that use his own instrumental abilities rather than a simple drum machine. Club and radio jams are provided through ?Hand in Hand? and ?Down, Down, Down?. Street anthems come from the Snoop and Nate Dogg assisted ?Medley for a V? and ?Youz a Gangsta? where Quik tries to spread peac with former rival MC Eight. When it comes down to it, the hits don?t stop. In my opinion this is the best Quik album to date. It provides a refreshing sound that can hopefully be emulated if not surpassed by the upcoming UNDER THE INFLUENCE. An album where Quik is taking the reigns into his own hands on the independent Eutonic label and where he accepted heavy mentoring from another Compton great Dr.Dre.
